Bengaluru's Ashwini Ponnappa has announced her retirement from competitive Olympic sports following her participation in the 2024 Paris Olympics. As a three-time Olympian, she acknowledged the immense expectations and pressure placed on athletes, emphasizing the need for thorough preparation for the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Her decision to step back from the sport holds great significance for Indian badminton, symbolizing more than fifteen years of representing India on the international stage. Raised in Bengaluru, Ashwini has always been passionate about badminton, although she highlights the importance of education alongside sports for aspiring young athletes. By emphasizing the dual importance of academics and athletics, she encourages individuals to have a backup plan in case their sporting aspirations do not unfold as expected. Additionally, she admires Vinesh Phogat and highlights the lessons that can be learned from Phogat's experiences, including the challenges faced in competitive sports.I didn't get a chance to interact with her, but I am certain her aspirations would have been crushed. I can deeply relate to Vinesh. She is an athlete who worked tirelessly and valiantly made her way to the final. Her incredible journey has a lot to teach us," says Ashwini.

"Some individuals can handle criticism on social media, while others struggle with it." To maintain a strong mental state and minimize external pressure during major events like the Olympics, Ashwini advises staying away from social media. "I experienced a lot of negative feedback on social media during the Paris Olympics. While some can ignore such criticism, not everyone can. I have learned from that experience," she explains.

Even though athletes receive government funding, it is essential that the resources are managed effectively. Not all players possess high levels of mental resilience. Coaches and support staff should focus on boosting players' confidence as well as their skills, emphasizes Ashwini Ponnappa.

Olympic athletes face immense pressure, and hope and pressure go hand in hand. It is vital how one manages expectations, reflects Ashwini Ponnappa.
